Life Post-Grad

Graduating in less than a week is both an exhilarating and terrifying feeling. Not only does it mean that I’m done with school (for now), but it also means that I’m officially entering the real world, and with that comes major change. The amount of constant that I choose to keep in my life is purely up to me but the changes- those are debatable. As a fresh college graduate, that’s what life is going to entail: rolling with the punches and keep on swinging.

Carpe Diem

From the Portland Senior Experience Blog:

In two days, we’ll be exactly one month away from being decked out in our commencement regalia and walking at graduation; and for some of us, that’s as far as we have planned. Being the ENFJ that I am, I’m trying to not freak out that my life beyond June 18th has yet to be determined.

When I reflect on the past seven weeks, I think about my successes and shortcomings, everything I’ve learned, the projects that still lay ahead, and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and satisfaction. But am I really what they hoped for?

T-E-A-M Work!

Like many of my peers, I came into the Portland Senior Experience wide-eyed, ready to jump in headfirst and give it my all. Prior to this, I’ve worked and interned in many team environments before, but it all pales in comparison to the boutique public relations firm I’m currently interning for.

I couldn’t be luckier, or happier, to be interning where I am and I’ve learned so much within these first three and a half weeks. There are several attributes that have resonated with me thus far, but a common thread that I’ve noticed is how important our weekly team meetings are.

Tuesday team meetings bring all five of us together in order to get everyone on the same page, allow us to brainstorm and bounce ideas around and support each other with our individual projects. These meetings also give us a chance to collectively put our projects into perspective and see how they fit into the bigger picture in relation to each client.

Guess Who’s Back?!

For starters, I’d like to apologize for dropping off the grid for a while. My last real post (not including reblogging infographics I found) was a month and a half ago. Shame shame on me!

It’s been an exceptionally busy time for me with many transitions: I recently moved to Portland, OR, and am currently finishing my degree at University of Oregon’s Portland campus, and interning 30 hours a week at a boutique public relations and marketing firm.

Social Media Must: Engage Your Audience

When I initially began this 10-week journey of a blogging assignment, I really didn’t think I would be engaging with anyone, or that my blog would actually be read by anyone other than my professors or the occasional browsing classmate. I knew the Internet had created a whole other world of communication, but it didn’t occur to me that my reach would be beyond J452. Boy oh boy, was I in for a surprise…

Engaging with your readers is crucial in the success of your social media or blogging strategies. The days of simply talking at your audience are long over- it’s all about talking with your audience. A simple ‘Like’ or ‘+Follow’ isn’t really worth anything unless you’re interacting with the person who liked or followed you in the first place.

Social Media is Sexy

With the Millennial addiction to social media, one would be led to think it’s preprogrammed in our brains how to use it. Unfortunately, most Millennials use social media for just that: to be social. What Generation X or younger doesn’t understand is that social media can be used to our advantage, both personally and professionally. Thankfully, the Millennial light bulb has illuminated and they’re finally embracing that social media is becoming one of the most important professional tools they will need to boost their careers- not just to share their love of Beiber or current mood.

Kate Braddock, executive social and media director of Syracuse, wrote an interesting article about the nine ways students could use social media to boost their careers; and even though the article is geared towards students, I think it’s a great reminder and tip for all professionals.

When I first started college, I was reluctant to give in to the social media trend beyond having a simple Facebook account. Twitter, Flickr, and blogging just weren’t some things that I could get into the habit of doing; now, I can’t imagine not being apart of the social media sphere and actively contributing to it. Pinterest: Visual Media Done Right

The up-and-coming creative social media sensation that has everyone abuzz and curious these days is Pinterest.

Whether it’s a strategic tool for planning events or a daily diversion favorite, it’s generating a lot of attention from a variety of diverse audiences. In my opinion, it’s visual media done right.

Pinterest’s ingenious and talented entrepreneurial team was able to harness both social and visual media to create a generic, yet versatile, site. Because of Pinterest’s versatility, it can appeal to many audiences without altering several different aspects to adapt to the audiences’ needs. As a result, Pinterest is the new marketing, advertising, mommy blogger, DIY, and social media favorite, to list a few. Granted a majority of Pinterest’s users are female, there are plenty of male users as well. Pinterest is a perfect example of the classic communication’s Uses and Gratifications theory in relation to how and what users turn to Pinterest for. Continue reading
